E News!

For this critical listening assignment I chose to listen to the television program E news! This was easier then going to sit in my car and try to find a radio program on at ten p.m. I listened to the program from my computer desk, in my living room. I took notes throughout the show so I could make sure to remember key information in the program. It was surprisingly rather easy to avoid actually watching the television show seeing as our computer desk is across the room from the television and your back faces the television. This is a program I watch every once and a while, but I was actually not familiar with the hosts until listening to it. It just happened to be coming on after Dr. 90210 and I thought it would be appropriate being a news program where I new I would hear several different voices.

Through the show I heard plenty of voices. All the headlines switched between two main voices. One of these voices was a female who I could not quite put my finger on who it was, and the other was a male whose voice I recognized from the popular show, American idol. There were also voices of several stars throughout the program. Some of them I could recognize and others I had no idea. It was fun to try and figure out who you were hearing. I do have to admit there was a couple times that I HAD to turn around and see who it was because it was driving me nuts.

You could tell just by the expression and tone in the host's voices whether they were reporting something serious or if it was more of a joking matter. Like another stab at Brittney Spears! Not only did I hear jokes and more gossip on Brittney, but I heard about the Halloween party at the playboy mansion, about Paris's new perfume, about the fashion do's and don'ts on the red carpet this past weekend, Kristy Swanson's weight loss, and plenty more Hollywood gossip!

It was definitely weird to just sit back and listen rather than watching. I never realized how important the expression in one's voice was. I found this assignment very interesting! I think I actually heard more than I would have if I would have actually been watching it. I also found it humorous how they put fake laughter in the background of the program. I never realized this until just listening. It is easier to miss information if you have the picture to distract you away from the words.
