The general public has a belief that technology would improve the healthcare quality, efficiency safety, and cost. A few people, however, have a feeling that the same technology would introduce adverse events and errors. Information technology supports the providers’ ability to shift to new care models such as disease management, inpatient, and ambulatory services. Information systems are customized to meet the healthcare system needs. When implementing the systems, a loss of productivity is experienced before the nurses stabilize in using the systems. Technology has transformed the way in which nursing care is delivered and conceptualized. Before technology implementations, nurses depended heavily on their senses of smell, sight, hearing and touch to detect changes and monitor patient status (Anderson & Aydin, 2010). Cost management practices are essential in nursing and the overall healthcare organization survival. Nurses, nurse leaders and other providers have a pivotal role in perfecting care protocols and standardizing care approaches (Porzsolt & Kaplan, 2006).

These factors have changed the characteristics of nurses and nursing. As a result of technology, nursing has become fast and accurate. It has increased the efficiency of nurses. Pressures of healthcare cost have made nursing cheap and affordable. Nurses have also focused on patient care as a result (Porzsolt & Kaplan, 2006).
