He made many contributions to the rock and roll community. Elvis also had a great screenplay career. He revolutionized the movie making industry as well as the music industry.
Elvis grew up into a common laid back family. Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8th 1935. He later changed his middle name to Aaron the more common way to spell that name. His parents were Vernon and Gladys Presley. He was born into a two-room house in Tupelo Mississippi. He also had a stillborn brother named Jessie Garon. Jessie would have been the identical twin brother of Elvis. This left Elvis to be the only child for Vernon and Gladys Presley.
Elvis started his singing career early. In 1945 his voice was first recognized when he got second place in a talent contest. In 1948 Elvis, Vernon, and Gladys moved to Memphis Tennessee. Five years after they moved to Memphis, Elvis graduated from Humes High School. Elvis had many plans made for his life.
His musical career was to soon take off like a rocket. In the same year he graduated he also got a record deal with the legendary Sun Records in Memphis Tennessee. Soon after he records his first album with Sun Records his single "That's All Right" was released. The first d. j. to play the single was Dewey Philips. Elvis was quickly becoming a superstar and was too much for Sun Records to handle all the business.
Soon after his single was recognized to be a hit, Elvis knew he must get a new label. RCA Victor soon signed Elvis in 1955, when he was only 20 years old. One year later he was an international superstar. People around the world were beginning to recognize the greatness of Elvis Presley. In 1956, Elvis made his network television debut with the first of his six appearances on Stage Show, a weekly variety program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Everyone was starting to see how big Elvis was going to be.
Elvis soon started to sell more and more records. Elvis soon records the song "Heartbreak Hotel". This is his first single to go gold. Elvis would get many more platinum and gold records. Elvis ended up recording 61 different albums. Of his 61 albums there were a lot of singles. Elvis had almost 150 different songs on the Billboard Top 100 charts in America. 114 made it to the top 40, 40 were in the top ten, and 18 went to number one. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 131 different albums and singles. Elvis had a great career in music, made a permanent mark in the history of music.
Elvis also served his country in the U. S. Army. This came into play on many of his songs. His time in the service also affected his newly found acting career. His longest running single "G. I. Blues" was inspired by his time in the Army. It spent more then two years in the Billboard Top 40. 10 of the weeks he owned the number one seed. In 1961, Elvis gave a benefit concert at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. He also met his soon to be wife Priscilla Beaulieu. Being in the Army helped Elvis in many ways.
Elvis was one of the greatest entertainers of all time. At the age of 36 he received the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement. Elvis put this beside his other two Grammy's, which he won off of his 14 nominations. Elvis also had over 1,100 different concerts in the U. S. and Canada. He never performed in a country that was not part of North America. Elvis also made 33 successful movies. He sold over a billion records, more then any other artist in history. Elvis settled down a little from businesses and started a family. Elvis proposed to Priscilla on Christmas Day 1967. She gladly accepted and they were married later that year. Elvis and Priscilla never had a child. They were never divorced and the marriage seemed to be solid. Unlike the marriage of Elvis's parents Vernon and Gladys. Elvis's mother remarried a second time. Although Elvis's father never did remarry. Elvis always seemed to be happy with his family.
