The use of eminent domain to promote private enterprise is a highly debated topic. It spawned from the recent Kelo V City of New London court ruling, were the Supreme Court allowed the taking of citizens land, with just compensation, to build businesses. The government is supposed to take care of its citizens, and by using eminent domain for private enterprise they do this. There are a few downsides to eminent domain, but they are worth it for all of the good that can be achieved.
Eminent domain to promote private enterprise has inherent benefits that contribute to the overall welfare of society. A private enterprise that comes into an area, usually a blighted one, it brings a lot to the community, enough to outweigh people's desire to own property. Private enterprises bring jobs and increase the tax base, which benefits a community greatly. Many people think that businesses have their own agenda and aren't trying to benefit the community, but the agenda of the business is to make money, and as the business makes money they pay more and more taxes, so businesses having agendas is good for the community because the tax base is growing as the business carries out their "agendas". As the tax base of an area increases the schools gain more funding so the people in these poor areas receive a better education and then more people can become educated and go to good colleges and become successful, which will eventually lead to an increase in the overall quality of life in these urban areas. A just government is supposed to take actions to benefit its citizens
The government's main job is to promote the welfare of the community, and they government cannot let one individual get in the way of this or there would be no jails or any other punishment mechanisms at all. Similarly, the government should use eminent domain to promote private enterprise because the entire community will benefit and the quality of life will greatly increase throughout the area. Since it is the government's job to provide for its citizens eminent domain to promote private enterprise is just and should continue to be used in urban areas.
