With the continued growth in population worldwide and the increase in industrial activity in some parts of the world, one can only wonder if we will ever reach a Green Future. One powered by clean energy, were all have enough to adequately satisfy their energy needs and the environment is no longer at risk from the effects of both population growth and industrial activity. It is thoughts like these that sparked my interest in studying Energy engineering. I feel clean energy is not simply limited to the development of hydro electric power, wind and solar energy as well as other renewable energy sources. It includes the development of greener methods of energy and electricity production from fossil fuels while we have them by methods such as coal gasification, the development of more efficient and cost effective renewable energy and electrical power systems like cars powered completely by hydrogen fuel cells. Clean energy development is also about creating energy policies that do not exert too much on natural resources ,give the people of any community as many options to satisfy their needs without harming their environment and over the future could be more.
During an Academy and Sports awards ceremony at school, the Guest speaker gave a speech that has weighed on my mind for a while. The undertone of his speech was that we as the young generation should not simply go into the world after school and passively live normal lives, dealing with the ordinary problems of daily life as they come but rather that we should strive to engage the world with purpose striving to live outside the norm, tackling the extraordinary problems of our generation and time. While waiting for my O'level results in 2011, I had the opportunity to do community service at an underprivileged school in Mbare Harare. I aided teachers in marking the children's books and sometimes taught them either Math or Geography. From interacting with the children I noted that some of them had absolutely no access to electricity either because the area they lived in was not connected to the national grid or their parents could not afford the high cost of electricity or due to the constant power cuts that plague the whole country. Despite these setbacks, the children always did their homework, mostly under candle light. This propelled my desire to study energy engineering even further. I can ensure that children across the whole country can have a constant supply of electricity
