The cause and effect topic that I chose to write about was on Digital Piracy and what the government’s response to it was. The essay took an overall look at how digital piracy not only affects the entertainment industry but also the government’s around the world. This self-assessment will take a deeper look at what was really successful, like the overall research and points, and what areas needed improvement, like citations and ways data was presented.

To begin, there were a number of successes that I had while writing this essay. One of the biggest successes that I had was how I incorporated the research into a formulated thesis that molded the paper to what it eventually became. The way that I was successful with that was that I organized all the raw data out in a sheet and listed them by importance, and then found the effect while pairing them up. Developing a thesis this way kept the point of the paper strong while making sense. Some comments that I had received were that the causes were well stated, and that points made sense. Some other strong feedback was the in text citations. A reviewer had mentioned something along the lines that the quote was clear and clearly cited. It also fit in with the topic that was being discussed. I think what made me successful was that of what I mentioned above. I clearly laid all the probable topics out and chose the ones that would be strong and easy to write about. Not only were there successes, but there were also areas of opportunity.

With any paper, there are always areas of opportunity. One of the biggest areas of opportunity that I felt I had was how I cited quotes. I feel that throughout the paper, I might have incorporated quotes from various authors that fit perfectly into the essay itself, but I didn’t cite or give them credit enough. Along with that, I felt I could have expanded more on the actual quote or paraphrase that I was incorporating. Throughout the paper, I sometimes felt that I added quotes or paraphrases just to add them. They might not have really fit in there like they should have. Another one of the opportunities that I think I have as a writer is how I transition from one point to another. I feel that the transitions are there, but could be ironed out smoother to make the transition make more sense. The last and final opportunity I think
