Executive Summary

3M® Corporation's Corporate Headquarters is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a diversified technology company serving customers and communities with innovative products and services, including Post-It® Notes office supplies.

The latest 3M® innovation from Poca, WV U.S.A., is the Post-It® Bracelet. The wrist strap/bracelet, with a small Post-It® container, would fit securely on either side of the wrist. A plastic protector would snap down over the Post-It's to protect it from everyday hazards. The bracelets would come in different styles for different personalities and purposes.

How many times have you been stuck needing to write down a reminder, but you have nothing to write on but your hand? I have a device that can solve all of that. This product is practical and stylish too. Combine the forces of miniature Post-It® Notes, and a fashionable bracelet, and you get the Post-It® Bracelet. With this, you have a handy reminder right at your wrist! The bracelet has a protective casing over the Post-It's, so you don't have to worry about water damage or losing your note. Even better, since the paper is a Post-It®, you can conveniently stick them on your computer screen, car dashboard, cell phone, or wherever as an extra reminder!

The main competition for 3M® and the Post-It® Bracelet would be discount-brand competition who would try to produce their own version and sell them at their stores. Examples of such competition include: Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Wal-Mart, and Target.

The management team for the Post-It® Bracelet would consist of Project CEO, George Foreman, and the rest of the 3M® Executive Team.

Financially, for this project, 3M® would have to borrow approximately $20,000 from its current investors for the test market distribution of the Post-It® Bracelet. The current investors include the common stockholders and other corporate investors in the industry.

Business Description

3M® currently holds hundreds of patents on its unique products and services. A patent is currently pending on the idea of the Post-It® Bracelet. Patents currently apply to Post-It® Notes, and a trademark on the 3M® and the Post-It® name brands.

The Operations Headquarters for 3M® is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, with production facilities and offices located in over 30 U.S. States. The closest production plant is located in Poca, West Virginia.

Production of the Post-It® Bracelets would begin approximately six weeks following approval of the business plan. Main production would occur at the Poca, West Virginia plant, and be shipped to destinations from that location.

History of the Post-It®

In the early 1970s, Mr. Art Fry was in search of a bookmark for his church hymnal that would neither fall out nor damage the hymnal. Fry noticed that a colleague at 3M®, Dr. Spencer Silver, had developed an adhesive that was strong enough to stick to surfaces, but left no residue after removal and could be repositioned. Fry took some of Dr. Silver's adhesive and applied it along the edge of a piece of paper. The paper stuck, and was easily removed without damaging his precious hymnals, problem solved!

Fry soon realized that this discovery had other potential functions, such as when he used it to leave a note on a file, and when co-workers kept asking for their own Post-It's. They had created a new way to plan and organize. The 3M® Corporation crafted the name Post-It for Fry's discovery and began production in the late 1970s for test marketing.

In 1977, test-markets failed due to lack of consumer interest. However in 1979, 3M® implemented a massive consumer sampling strategy, and the Post-It took off. Today, we see Post-It's® scattered across papers, computers, desks, and doors
