Essay on Never Just Pictures: Bodies and Fantasies
In our world today, everybody wants to look fabulous even if it means buy it or working towards it that will be done so far at end it will make them look fantastic. There are so many adverts today that showcase ways to lose the fat and get into the shape that you want which is one of the normalcy in our society. These adverts are so common and powerful that they can lure a person into what they don't want but for the urge to belong to the society they will do it. In the article "Never just pictures: Bodies and Fantasies" by Susan Bordo, wrote about how our society looks at the conception of beauty and normality. She went on to state how the media have influenced the current trend and what the society affected are doing to conform the new trend. The new trend in the world is that of thin body, if you are few pounds above your ideal weight you are considered overweight at times if you are at your correct body weight you are still considered over weight. Everybody wants to be as thin and bony as possible to conform to the trend invoke now. These days, everybody wants to be in shape and beat the fat by eliminating our stomachs, busting our thighs, taming our tummies and purging our bodies.
Girls of these days wants to be like what the media pictures as the normalcy, so they either do not eat or eat and purge. This kind of behavior will lead to eating disorder which according Bordo "it is one that has become a norm of cultural perception". They try to imitate the designers and models who are conscious of their weight every time they put food in their mouth. As the girls are being conscious of their body, conflict develops that leads to anxiety about the body as the source of hungers, needs and physical vulnerability not within our control. Bordo wrote "these anxiety are deep and long standing in western philosophy and religion, and they are especially acute in our own time. Eating disorders are also linked to the contradictions of consumer culture, which is continually encouraging us to binge on our desire at the same time as it glamourizes self-discipline and scorns fat as a symbol of laziness and lack of will power".
