On September 29, 2013 in New York City a man driving was out driving celebrating his wedding anniversary with his wife and two year old daughter when he was chased and brutally beaten by members of a motorcycle gang in front of his family. Alexian Lien, 33, was left bloody and had to be hospitalized. The New York Post reported that investigators viewed a six-minute clip taken with a helmet-cam that showed parts of the chase and gets cut off right before Lien is pulled out of his SUV and beaten by the mob. The bikers were trying to slow Lien down, get in front of him and take over the highway, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, reported the New York Post . They already had the entrances to the highway blocked off. A group of bikers took their helmets off and started hitting the sides of the SUV denting it. Lien panicked when other riders slashed the tires and slammed into a few bikers. Some bier were hurt, others stayed behind to help friends but about 30 of them chased Lien down the highway for more than 50 blocks. His SUV was damaged and Lien could not continue on the highway and tried to get out this, is where the assault on Lien occurred. One biker was seen taking his helmet off and breaking the driver's side window with it and the rest of the crew pulled him out the window of the SUV. They beat him on the pavement in front of his wife and child ().
1. The nature of the dilemma
The nature of the dilemma here is that an undercover New York detective was arrested for his alleged role in the attack on an SUV driver who was chased for miles by dozens of motorcycle riders. Detective Wojciech Braszczok, 32, was arrested more than a week after bikers pursued the sport utility vehicle (Edith Honan). This officer is the one scene in the video, taken by the helmet-cam, smashing the helmet with his helmet.
2. The ethical decision made
The officer made an ethical decision that was very wrong. The decision to take off his helmet and smash the helmet off a citizen he is supposed to be protection was an immoral act. Even if were just a normal citizen this act would truly be considered horrible but because it is someone sworn to uphold the law it become much worse. Actions like this is what makes public not trust in the police.
