Different Stories
Everyday Use by Alice Walker is a story where a young girl left home and began to look at the world different and grew apart from her mother and her younger sister who stayed back home in the same spot all their life. The basic conflict in the whole story is that the daughter left the house and began to have a different aspect on life compared to her mom and younger sister Maggie. The main problem in the story is the mother and the younger sister Maggie have never been anywhere to explore the world so they do not think with an open mind. Now that Dee has explored the world she has a very different view on things. Whereas the mom and Maggie only has one way of looking at things because that is all they have ever known. So when Dee comes back into their life it seems like she is trying to invade the things they have because she is constantly trying to take from them. The mom already have a protective instinct over the youngest daughter Maggie since the fire happened so when Dee comes in it is like Dee is showing as a threat towards them and the mother has no choice but to be defensive to protect what her and Maggie have.
Dee is considered to be in a different category than her mother and sister Maggie. Dee took a different path from the two. She decided to go out into the world while being out into the world she discovered that her heritage and she feels like this is the right way to live by. She changed her name to fit her lifestyle she wanted to live. I feel that she learned the value of where she came from. She look at her life back at home like it was gold. With her wanting to show the world so others can be inspired by what she seen. She do not think the things her mother and sister Dee have should be kept a secret and away from the rest of the world. She wants to share them so others can have the experience she had by sharing things with others.
Maggie and the mother value the things they have differently than Dee. The things they have are actually all they have. These two think that Dee is trying to show off and be too fancy than them. Momma is comparing Dee to who she once was before she left for school and she do not like the new person she have became when she returned home. Her mom was excited about her return until she realized that Dee was not the same girl. They look at things like it is their last penny compare to Dee seeing gold. Maggie
