Evolutionary Psychology vs. Standard Social Science Model
Evolutionary Psychology (EP) looks at how we view human behavior. The Standard Social Science Model (SSSM) is what most people have read and believed for many years. The SSSM believes that the influence on human behavior is experience and culture.
Both theories believe that there is a human nature that all people share as infants. The two models also disagree in many ways. The EP model believes that man is like all other species and is controlled by instincts to survive and fight for themselves, and that our basic human nature comes from the existence as cave men and hunters. The SSSM believes that we are born and then we grow from our experiences, environment and culture, and that biological influence on behavior and not as important. On the other hand the EP model believes that we are driven by hunger, thirst and sex.
Durant believes that laws and morals control our cave men instincts, and that our instincts have gone wild. He believes that this will lead to a period that will restore morality. I agree that we all have a human nature to survive and we have the instinct to fight for others as well as ourselves. We also have the basic biological needs such as shelter and food.
The SSSM model believes that society has a strong influence on an individual's nature. They believe we are formed based on our learned experiences throughout life. They also believe that we are shaped by the culture and the society that surrounds us.
The SSSM makes more sense to me and that we are born with needs and we develop more into them as we go through the stages of our lives. I also think that cultural influences and life experiences help to form who we are as individuals and play a big part on our behaviors.
