Patient falls are caused by multiple factors, which result from a complex interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic risk. Intrinsic risk factors is integral to the patient's system which are associated with changes related to aging, disease, they are including previous fall, decline in visual acuity, unsteady gait, poor mobility, confusion, acute illnesses such as stoke, orthostatic hypotension and chronic illnesses such as dementia and parkinsonism. Extrinsic risk factors is external to the system and relating to the physical environment, they are including medications that affect the central nervous system such as sedatives and benzodiazepines; condition of ground surfaces such as slick or wet floor surfaces, sliding rugs; furnishings that are too low or too high; improper use of devices such as unlocked wheelchairs, overuse of restraining devices; wearing unfitting size shoes or trousers; environmental hazards such as poor lighting.Patient falls are caused by multiple factors, which result from a complex interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic risk.
