Filipino Traits and Values

Good morning/afternoon to everyone! Before anything else, I would like to express my gratitude to our English teacher, Mrs. Elena Cruz who gave me the opportunity to share my knowledge to all of you.

We all know that every country in this world has its own traits and values. Our country, Philippines is consists of some remarkable values that other countries don’t acquire.

What are the values I usually notice when o interact with Filipino people?

First is hospitability which is one of the most popular traits of Filipinos. We Filipinos, usually welcome our guests warmly which also makes tourists visit our country more often. Filipinos tend to treat others in a very friendly way.

Second is resilience. What is resilience? It is the ability to recover readily from depression or adversity. Our country has experienced several tragedies and calamities. Examples for that is the super typhoon Yolanda that caused too much devastation to Filipinos, another one is the bombing in Davao which happened recently but due to Filipinos’ resiliency, they were able to stand and rise to start their lives again and create moments with their loved ones.

Third is faithfulness. Filipinos are known to be religious people. They have a strong faith in God. When we encounter problems, we always think God will always be there to help and guide us, it’s what assures us that there will always be a better tomorrow. It also makes our fighting spirit stronger ad keeps us dreaming for something even though some may seem impossible to happen.

Fourth is unity & Respectfulness. I’m pretty sure you’re all aware about this. Filipinos are also known to be courteous people. We do things that show respect to elders like using “po” and “opo” when talking to people older than us and we also do the “mano po” gesture as a sign of respect to elders. Filipino workers also have a polite expression always in front of their clients, customers and to those people who’s in the higher position than them.

Sixth is close family ties. We are known to be family-oriented people. Our first priority will always be our family. We’ll do everything or go through hardships just to provide safety and a good life to our family. We’re all aware about the Overseas Filipino Workers or OFW’s, they’re the ones who sacrifices their selves and work in a foreign land just to support the needs of their family in the Philippines.

Seventh is Filipinos’ jolliness and sense of humour. Filipinos are cheerful people. Even though we’re in the middle of hardships and problems, we still smile and laugh as if we don’t encounter problems, one reason why Philippines are called the country of smiles. We can always crack jokes and be happy or make people happy even in times of difficulty.

Eighth is Filipinos’ hardwork and dedication. As I’ve said earlier, Filipinos always give their very best to provide for their family and they do this through hardwork. We are so hardworking to the point that we could even work the whole day or do anything that could possibly affect our health just to be able to attain something we’ve been aiming for. One example for this is our Filipino farmers who work so hard and stay under the scorching heat of the sun and yet they earn so little, but they’ll do it just fr their families.
