This book is set in the future in another galaxy about a battle hardened team of men sent out by their unapproved Commander Dravere. Dravere sees the team (also known as Gaunt's ghosts [as their leader general Ibram Gaunt]) as a scapegoat in the army, then as an ally. He cares not for Gaunt and his men for they are the infantry men who don't give up and essentially blow through the enemy and steal the praise from Dravere. So along with Dravere, his lieutenants by his side help him to make the team of Ghosts disappear (without committing a mutiny). This book is very Graphic in detail and very gory as it is a book on war between the Imperial Guard against the Horde of Chaos. The world they are fighting on is called Fortis Binary also known as Forge World which was a mechanical world full of factories and Barren scorched land. All was peaceful before the Chaos army invaded the world and took control of the foundries and lay waste to any people and human history in its wake. They quickly raised their own relics and mutated the machines to suit them. This enabled them to make more of their own (as Chaos is based on making dead or dieing bodies of human races and conforming them into androids that are faster, stronger, and without fear. They may also conjure up their evil masters of darkness to receive their blessing of strength onto them or devastation on their enemy.

To the Imperials the Chaos must be stopped and Fortis Binary must be taken back at all costs! Gaunt and his regiment are fighting 2 wars, one between the Chaos and one between his own commander who wants to snuff him out without any word or mention. To Gaunt and his men, who he strikes courage into his men with every battle cry and verse, leads in the front of his line with his most trusted and draws his beloved chain sword.
