Executive Summary
Fishing sector is playing a very vital role regarding employment generation, animal protein supply, and foreign currency earning and poverty alleviation. Fisheries sector is contributing 5.71% of the total export earning and 4.92% to the GDP. About 12 million are directly or indirectly dependent
on this sector. Shrimp industry is almost half of the total fisheries industry. It has become second in the export items of Bangladesh is earning a lot of foreign currencies.
The objective of this report is to analyze the demand and supply situation of the shrimp industry. In figuring the estimation for past demand and supply we have used the data of export and production respectively of the country, although it does not accurately represent demand and supply. We have analyzed the future trends by concentrating on factors like change in domestic and international economy, government intervention, natural phenomenon etc.
The demand condition of the industry suggests that the industry is growing and should continue to grow unless any factor influencing supply and demand changes drastically. The supply condition is totally dependent
upon the demand. As the country has not yet reached the saturation point of production, with increasing demand, the supply will also increase.
The amount of money spent on luxury food items like shrimp is very less compared to the other countries of the world and Bangladesh is highly prone to tropical diseases with poor health and hygiene condition. These two factors foster a significant growth of the sector. So there are possibilities of growing demand stemming from new customers. But this will not be easy since the no. of countries competing in the global market are rising and soon it may become more than the growing demand. Bangladesh should take initiative in order to hold her position or rise it.
