For Pulse Kitchen
The way I run club is that we don’t always eat. Instead we discuss of possibilities of future projects. Last year when I ran this club, we did an activity every other time we met. I chose to stick to a lot of non baked food items, just because it is simple and we don’t have an oven and other cooking materials. I have 2 cubbies with cooking things in them (knives, cutting boards, spoons, bowls, sugar, flower, cake mix, etc.) There are 2 toasters as well, and the microwave in our PULSE office is ours to use. If you use Mr. Bowers’ fridge make sure you don’t mess with his things. So the way we would do projects last year is that we would come up with an activity, and then I would ask the students, “okay who wants to bring ….?” And students would volunteer and bring things to make. Either cooked or not. We have 2 grills as well. Last year we made tacos. I had a competition on the best dessert from home so I got to try different desserts, which was fun and yummy! You can change what you want in the timeline. You can also schedule the loop bus to go visit a restaurant or a bakery, first call the place before you go, and take the students to learn about the jobs in a restaurant. Try to not pay anything out of pocket, and make a supply request if needed. For food items I think you can request a P.O. from Christi, and she will help you. For the end of the season I would suggest you do a culminating event by creating a dinner for all PULSE at La Joya, teachers, staff, and even parents. With the big group we have I believe something great can happen. The end of the season will be in October, and what you want to have at your dinner party is up to you and the kids. Don’t hesitate to call or text me for some guidance, as I have done this before. Also you can try to reach out to the community for donations and let them know you are part of the district. An easy activity to do would even be like the kids bringing fondant, whip cream, frosting, and you can have someone bring baked cupcakes and do a decorating cupcake day. I did this last year and it was fun! Food coloring too for the frosting, so they all look different. You can make this a competition too! It would be fun, and you can limit their time as well! And please always remember to clean up. Have the students help you to clean and wash dishes, make sure no trash is on the floor, and we have a broom in the PULSE office in case you need it.
