Topic statement: The use of antibacterial products causes more harm than good

FOR

“For” source in MLA format: "Does Antibacterial Soap Cause More Harm than Good? FDA to Decide after Four Decades." CBSNews. CBS Interactive, n.d. Web. 15 Jan. 2015.

N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Jan. 2015.

  • Reason 1, with data to support: Laboratories have seen that antibacterial soap have problems. Laboratory testing has suggested that they can disrupt the endocrine system and cause hormonal interference, leading to poor sperm quality, infertility, and developmental problems.

  • Reason 2, with data to support: Studies have shown that triclosan, found in antibacterial soap, also has problems. Recent animal studies of triclosan  have led scientists to worry that it could case hormone-related problems in humans including an increase the risk of infertility and early puberty.

  • Reason 3, with data to support: Antibacterial compounds are used everywhere. Antibacterial compounds are used in 75 percent of all liquid soaps and 30 percent of bar soaps. They are also found in other types of cleaning products, deodorants, cosmetics, denture cleaners and plastics, including plastic children’s toys.

AGAINST

  • Reason 1, with data to support: Soap has good things to it. Soap decrease water's surface tension and binds to dirt, oil and bacteria

  • Reason 2, with data to support: Triclosan is used in hospitals, too. Triclosan was developed as a broad-spectrum antibiotic (that is, to kill a wide range of bacteria) and has been used in clinical settings since the late ‘60s to help prevent nosocomial (that is, hospital-borne) infections.

  • Reason 3, with data to support: Antibacterial soaps are very effective. Antibacterial products promise to kill 99.9 percent of germs.

OPINION

I am for the topic ” The use of antibacterial products causes more harm than good“ because studies show that laboratory testing has suggested that they can disrupt the endocrine system and cause hormonal interference, leading to poor sperm quality, infertility, and developmental problems. Also, recent animal studies of triclosan have led scientists to worry that it could case hormone-related problems in humans including an increase the risk of infertility and early puberty. And the problem is that antibacterial compounds are used everywhere. Antibacterial compounds are used in 75 percent of all liquid soaps and 30 percent of bar soaps. They are also found in other types of cleaning products, deodorants, cosmetics, denture cleaners and plastics, including plastic children’s toys. Antibacterial soap is very bad and I believe we should find a more beneficial way to clean ourselves.
