What Makes Music Memorable-Assignment 1

Many people have favorite songs. For some people their favorite song makes them happy. Others are reminded of fond memories. What makes our favorite music stand out to us is very different for each person; the reasons why music is memorable to me are as follows.

Music is memorable when it reminds you of a good memory. Some of my favorite music is reggae. The reason I like reggae so much is because it reminds me of all of my travels to the Caribbean. Reggae is played frequently at resorts and on excursions at many of the islands I have traveled to. Hearing reggae allows me to relive traveling to the Caribbean. Music is memorable when you have memories associated with that music.

Music is memorable when the lyrics relate to you. Many songs contain lyrics. If you can relate to the lyrics of the song, many people will like the song better. Hearing someone else going through the same hardships as you are in life can be a powerful thing. You gain someone that empathizes with you. At the same time, someone going through the same highs of life can also make a song really great. Hearing someone going through what you are experiencing in your life creates a very memorable song.

The artist can have an impact on whether you remember a piece of music or not. If you like the artist you often like the music. If the artist is a person you look up to and like as a person their music can often be much better. Conversely if the artists shares no similar moral values and is not similar to you in any aspect you might not like their music very well. If you can relate to the artist you often like the music. Hearing how an artist grew up or what the artist enjoys doing are two examples of how relating to the artist can lead to your liking their music. The artist behind the music determines the value of their music.

Making music memorable is a huge task for an artist when composing. For me relating to the artist and what they write about makes that artists music outstanding. Nostalgia also makes a song memorable. When listening to music and enjoying company of friends, or doing something you love, the piece becomes a way in which you can relive past events. Memorable music is good music and the more we understand the artist and the piece the more memorable the music becomes.
