Sex is a very pleasurable experience between a man and a women but it can
also be used to control one of the partners. In Paradise Lost, Adam and Eve
have
many sexual encounters that seem to keep Adam under the control of Eve.
Adam is so infatuated with Eve it gets him to give into temptation, as he never
had control over himself but that Eve had full control over him. But pleasure
can
be a dangerous game and can let temptation in. Satan takes advantage of Adam
and Eve’s lust by tempting them to eat the forbidden fruit, which would be the
ultimate allurement for them. It seems in every book within Paradise Lost Adam
and Eve have sex and it is the epitome of beauty without sin.
In book 1 Adam is created in the mirrored image of God and is considered
perfect. Eve is then created from one of Adams ribs and is considered to be the
lesser human of the two. God tells Adam to go get Eve away from the water and
he can’t because she is so infatuated by her beauty in the river. The only
sound
that snaps her out of her trance is Gods voice. Her beauty infatuates Adam but
Eve on the other hand isn’t very impressed with his looks. This is the
component that gives the impression that Eve is very narcissistic. Satan uses
her narcissism to tempt her while she is sleeping to go to the Tree of
Knowledge. Satan tries many times to tempt Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden
fruit from the tree of knowledge but fails at many of the attempts.
Adam and Eve talk about her dream that Satan induces into her slumber and
she awakes the next day feeling that the garden is out of order and that Adam
and her should separate to do more work. Adam sees the separation as a threat
and tells her it is better not to separate because she will be more tempted to
go
to the tree if he isn’t around. They argue for a bit but then Eve gives into
Adam
because he is control of her.
In book IV Adam and Eve are doing their day’s work and Adam tells Eve to
not complain about what they have to do because God has told them what has to
be done. She agrees with Adam of course and when they are done their work
they go back to their home and give praise to God and have sex. After Adam
and Eve fall asleep Satan turns himself into a toad and whispers into Eve’s ear
all
the tempting aspects of the forbidden Tree of Knowledge.
In book V Adam and Eve are about to eat and Raphael appears and Adam tells
her to make more food and of course she obeys again because Adam is in
charge of her and she listens to his ever beck and call. During this time Eve
leaves Adam and Raphael to speak alone because she would rather hear things
from Adam and not from anyone else. She seems to be very obedient to Adam
during this time. Raphael warns Adam to be weary of Satan and to do his best
to keep them out of harms way to not listen to Satan to tempt them to eat the
forbidden fruit.
In book VII Adam ask Raphael about how the world was created and why he
was created. Adam is very curious about life and all its living things.
Raphael
goes into detail that he was the first one created and Eve was the last one
created. He then tells Adam that creation took six days to make and they were
created last. The only rule God gave them was to not eat the fruit from the
Tree
of Knowledge and they need to obey.
In book VIII Adam asks about the stars and the planets and Eve leaves them
alone once again to let them talk for she would rather hear the conversation
from his lips and not from Raphael’s. Raphael listens to Adam speak about what
he remembers from his creation and how he fell in love with Eve instantly and is
warned that Eve is less worthy on the inside because Adam was created in the
eyes of God and is seen as perfect. The facts that Eve is beautiful she is
still the
lesser being and he needs to be aware of Eve’s weakness and that is her vanity
and it will be easy to trick her into eating from the Tree of Knowledge. He
also
makes him aware that he shouldn’t search for the answer to love. Raphael then
warns Adam again to stay way from Satan because of the prophecy of the fall of
man.
Adam then realizes he must take more control over Eve or Satan will trick her
with her vanity and she will eat from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge. Adam
