The Pursuer's
Never giving up on reams is a common theme in people's everyday life. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "The Great Gatsby," many of the characters spend their entire lives striving to reach their dreams and even die trying. Both Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway have particular dreams that they aspire to reach. Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby may have different dreams, but they pursue them similarly in a deliberate and methodical manner.
When he had first moved to New York, Nick "had a dog...and an old Dodge and a finnish women who made [his] bed and cooked breakfast"(8). Here, Nick has just moved into his new house in West Egg which is the less "fashionable" of the two Eggs. By moving to New York and working here, Nick started his first step of following the original American Dream, which was owning his own land. Owning land during the 1920s was the main reason why many immigrants came to American. Nick is an immigrant in the sense because he has come from Minnesota and has come to New York to own his own land. To Nick "middle west now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe- so [he] decided to go east and learn the bond business" (7). Here in the novel, Nick tells of his dream of pursuing his dream of working in the bond business or business world. His drive was to be able to live up to his family name because while growing up his family's name was very prominent in the business world. Lastly, Nicks relationship with Jordan Baker "was something more. [He] felt a tender curiosity" towards her. (62) Tom and Daisy had always pressured Nick into dating Jordan. someone and fall in love and eventually have a family. By dating Jordan, even though he did not marry her, Nick still pursued his dream by falling in love with a woman.
Gatsby's pursuit of the dream differs from Nicks, Gatsby's actions were signally purposed to gain the love of Daisy Buchanan where as Nick has multiple aspirations. Gatsby's exotic mansion had a view of "a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been a end of a dock" (46). By gaining money and moving to West Egg, Gatsby was able to feel closer to his "dream," Daisy. This shows that Daisy was his underline driving factor in his success throughout his
