Genocide In our History
Through out history there has been a numerous amount of massacres, holocauts, and genocides. These horrible acts of violence are also known as a massive killing of a nationality, members of an ethnic group or people of a certain religion. Within my life time there has been a genocide that has stood out to be one of the most horrifying
events. This genocide would be the killing of the Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda.
The genocide in Rwanda started in April, 1994, with the death of the Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana. His plane was shot down while flying back to Rwanda. The intentions of him being killed were of the members of the military and government whom did not agree with the changing of the already Rwandan policies. They received
word of the meeting and discussion of the new Arusha-Accord, sharing of powers, that was going to be made between
them and the Patriotic Front. Shorty after the death of the president the Presidentail Gaurd, Rwandan Armed Forces, and the extremist militia implemented their arranged plan to decimate the Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda. They first sought out to kill all the opposers of the genocide, then to kill the ones who wanted to inforce the Arusha-Accord. Most importantly the purpose was to get rid off all the government
officals who were not willing to join in with this genocide. This massacre was to be remebered as the most significant number of people killed in such a short period of time. Why so was because the death toll reached almost a million in 100 days. The inadequate response of the United Nation to this situation had a considerable amount of contribution to the outcome of such a high number of deaths. It was not until
months after the genocide ended that the United Nations Sercurity Counsel decided to send in troops. The sending of these troops did do good though, they saved many lives and conducted order. After the troops arrived France interposed to stop all the killings. Concluding the genocide the Rwanda Patriotic Front came in to announce a new governement.
I am sure many people have heard of this tragedy and feel the same way I do. When this happened I was only eight years old so I was unaware of this genocide at the time. It wasn't until recently that I was in Blockbuster and saw the movie Hotel Rwanda on the shelf. Being a fan of movies that are based on true stories and not knowing what this was about, I checked out the movie to watch. I can remember during
