Noli me Tangere as we all know is one of Rizal's most famous masterpieces. Last July 21, I was able to watch a stage play by Dulaang UP portraying this novel. It was fun and very musical. I was impressed for the music went all throughout the play and it was really exceptional because it was so beautifully done.
Though the play was a lot more of singing than stating, still, the actors and stage players were able to communicate their message to the audience very clearly. The thoughts that they tried to convey were easily grasped making the people watching more emotionally involved. Especially during the part when Ibarra and Maria Clara bid good bye. Maybe for me it is because even though they conversed in a musical manner, the tone of their voices, the pitch, variety, rate, quality and other aspects of voice were all used properly and perfectly. Even the actions, facial expressions, body movements and other nonverbals were very vivid and heartfelt. Thus making the message of the play be easily understood. And if I am given the chance to rate the play as a whole, I will give it a rate of 4.5 out of 5 because the play was very nice. The setting, music, props, ambiance and all its other aspect were perfect. The stage players did really well. They were so professional during the act- they sang well and their voices were loud enough for everyone to hear plus you can see that they did internalize their roles because they have put it into life successfully and with justice. But I just noticed something that disturbed me while I was watching the play. This may sound some sort of funny and nonsense but it did disturb me. Swear. Well, I find the actor who did Ibarra's role a lot older than the one who did Maria Clara's. It was just so disturbing on my part that instead of me being "kilig" there were thoughts running in my mind like 'pedophile!', 'child abuse!' (pertaining to Ibarra's character) and many other funny, bad and negative thoughts that caused me not to focus much on the message of the play. LOL. Well maybe it was just I who got disturbed anyway but that's what caused the deduction of my rating. But the play as a whole was a very successful one.
