* People (currently 2.6 billion living within 100km of coastline) have always lived and worked by the coast, and visiting it.
* Coastal settlements built around
Docks - A stretch of coast with specially built sea walls and deep water so that ships can come in to load and unload.
Ports - A coastal town where ships and boats come and go
Harbours - A sheltered part of a coastal town where ships and boats can safely shelter, load and unload. Often a harbour wall is built out to sea to prevent big waves coming in.
* Serve important economic functions and provide employment like container shipping, fishing, ferries and passenger liners
* Many people who live and work by the coast are involved in tourism.
* They own, run, or work in hotels, guest houses, caravan sites, self-catering cottages and bed and breakfast accommodation.
Greece
* 16,000km coastline, about 7000km made up by 1000 of islands of Greek archipelago
* 1400 islands, of which 227 are inhabited
* Maritime industry vital to country's economy
* Shipping consists of 4.5% of GDP, 4% workforce
* Greek-owned maritime fleet (containers, tankers) largest in the world- 18% of world's fleet capacity
* Mediterranean climate: major producer of olive oil
* Tourism is important for the country too
* Winter-sailing to experience island culture
* E.g. Spetses- home to century-old craftmanship of making wooden boats

* Strong negative public reaction often aggravate the problem
