Gilbert Grape Case File Assignment
This assignment is structured to assist you in applying the generalist intervention model (competency #10). This assignment will require that you work in groups of 4 building a case file for the Grape family. Each group will submit one case file per group and each member of the group will receive the same grade. Each week we will cover the generalist intervention model and spend class time working on assignments. This assignment is worth 50 points.
The following is the assignment broken down per stage.
Introduction
In order to being working with a client, a social worker needs to understand the developmental stage a client is in. Your first assignment will be to review developmental theory and apply it appropriately to practice with an assigned member of the Grape family. This assignment will require you to review developmental theory to prepare for the written assignment. Refer to the Developmental Theory Assignment handout on D2L.
Engagement
Bonnie is a signal mother who has isolated herself from society following the suicide of her husband. Her children have assumed complete care of her and her mentally disabled son, Arnie. Arnie has climbed the town's water tower on several occasions. A report to child protective services was made out of concern for his safety. This case has been referred to alternative response to assist the family in keeping Arnie safe. You have been assigned as the intake worker to investigate the safety and wellbeing of Arnie.
There will be information you will need prior to going out to the home to meet with the family for the first time. Complete the handout: Grape Family Intake
Assessment

This means that you need to be mindful how much information the family will provide you on your very first visit. It is suggested you be creative here and put yourself in the shoes of the family members. What would they share with you at this stage of the relationship? Use quotations to capture what they may provide for some of the categories. An assessment is your opportunity to capture the client's story. What is the Grape's story? Be careful not to project what you (as the social worker) would want for this family but what this family sees as the problem and possible goals they would be willing to work on. Use the Grape family Assessment to complete this assignment.
Intervention
Now that you have completed your assessment and established a working relationship with the Grape family, it is time to begin contracting with the family on the specific goals that they would like to work on. This assignment, the Grape Family Treatment Goals and Objectives,
