Harriet Beecher Stowe

I have chosen the book Harriet Beecher Stowe a biography by Dana Fuller Ross. The reason that I have chosen this author is because she fascinates me by her anti slaver novel Uncle Toms Cabin. I am also fascinated by the courage she had to be able to write a story like that. I have also heard many fascinating things about this author.

She started writing with her sister while teaching at the school her sister ran. When she wrote Uncle Toms Cabin the south had hatred towards her while the north liked her for the writing of the book.

Harriet married Calvin Stowe, a professor and clergyman. He also opposed slavery. Together, they housed fugitive slaves, and encouraged each other in their writing. Calvin wrote only one book to Harriet's many, but he urged her to establish her own writing career; he even became her literary agent in both the United States and England. She had seven children.

The most surprising thing that I found out about Harriet was that four of her seven children died. One died of cholera, another by drowning, another from mental illness, and yet another from a drug addiction. I didn't know they had drug addiction in those days. Samuel Charles died of cholera.

Nothing really disappointed me. There wasn't much not to like

I would say she cared most about Uncle Toms Cabin because it opened people's eyes to what was really going on in the south with the slaves.

I would say that it was when her and her sister Catharine because they would write at the school Catharine was in charge of.

I learned that there were many hard times in the older days that we don't have to worry about anymore. If she had lived in today's society her four kids would have had a better chance at survival.
