In the chapter 1 and 2, the author described about the two initial steps of SHIFT model, Specify the desired outcome and Highlight and categorize the obstacles. All individuals have small and big goals in their lives and they work constantly to achieve those goals. The human has a great power to imagine the good and bad outcomes in his mind. This imagination motivates him to do work better to get the desired outcome. However, we have noticed in our personal and professional lives that some outcomes do not reflect our imagination or it has some deficiencies. The reason is when we desired the outcome we do not specify it correctly or we ignore the little things in broader picture. For example, the author has given her own example that she wanted to become a successful public speaker, so she specified her desired outcome. However, she sacrificed her family responsibilities to achieve her one goal and she did not consider her successful. Therefore, in business situations the management should specify the desired outcome by looking all the aspects if they are not sacrificing their other parts to achieve one goal. The businesses should look at the quantitative and the qualitative success aspects for the desired outcomes. For example, if a company is launching a new product, they should think about that how much revenue it is creating, what would be the effect on the stock prices of the company and how will it affect the sales of other products of same company and other competitive companies etc. If the management decides its outcome after taking account of these aspects, it has more chances to become successful. The personal, professional and business goals must be SMART goals i.e they should be Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time bounded. For example, our company has specific goal to increase the measurable revenue about $2 million. The last year revenue was $1.6 million so it is realistic goal to achieve, moreover, economy is good this year and we launched a new product so our goal is actionable and we have to achieve this goal in one year time period. We also should keep in mind that we should know the purpose of the desired outcome.

We also know that life is not a bed of roses, so we always have obstacles in our personal lives, so that is with the businesses too. The people and the businesses who overcome from their obstacles become successful and the others have hard time to achieve their desired goals. The first step to solve
