Uncle Tom's Cabin- This novel represented the horrors and reality of slavery. It brought upon a new outlook on slavery. It also helped lead to the Civil War. The novel was largely disapproved in the pro-slavery south.
Declaration of Independence- It declared that the colonies were an independent nation as well as gave reasons for breaking from Great Britain. This led to France helping out the colonies during the Revolutionary War.
The Influence of Sea Power upon History- Discussed the various factors needed to achieve naval power, placed emphasis on having the largest and most powerful fleet. It ultimately caused the naval arms race during World War I.
Common Sense- It explained the advantages and the need to declare independence from Great Britain. It further inspired the people of the colonies to fight for their own independence from Great Britain.
The Jungle- Showed the the health violations and unsanitary practices of the American meatpacking industry. It led to the Pure Food and Drug Act, as well as the Meat Inspection Act passed by President Theodore Roosevelt.
The Report on Manufacturers- Recommended economic policies to stimulate the economy of the new republic. The main ideas of this report were used in the "American System" created by Henry Clay.
The Significance of the Frontier in American History- Represented the views of Frederick Jackson Turner, which were that the expansion of the frontier altered American characteristics and culture. He said that expansion of the frontier drove American history into what it was at the time
The Feminine Mystique- Is widely credited with sparking second-wave feminism in the United States. The novel conducted interviews of suburban housewives, in which author Betty Friedan came to understand that many women were unhappy with their place as housewives.
The Liberator- A Boston abolitionist newspaper created by William Lloyd Garrison, that received national attention for its advocacy for the complete emancipation of all slaves. It helped lead to the abolishment of slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment.
A Century of Dishonor- Conveyed the horrors and injustices of the Native Americans in the US. It was written in an attempt the change government policy on the treatment of Native Americans.
The Federalist Papers- A series of 85 articles promoting the ratification of the United States Constitution. These articles led to the ratification of the Constitution and the formation of the government in which we still live by today.
The Gospel of Wealth- Described the responsibility and philanthropy of the upper class. Carnegie believed the best way to redistribute their vast wealth was to give it away in a thoughtful manner. These ideals are still seen in America today.
On Civil Disobedience- Author Henry David Thoreau, argued that individuals showed not allow the government to control the individual believed. This was written as a result of slavery in America and the Mexican-American War.
The Grapes of Wrath- Set during the Great Depression, displayed the economic hardship of a family, and their desire for a better future. This novel helped display the significance and merely hopeless situation of the Great Depression.
The Shame of the Cities- Showed the political corruption in the major US cities, along with the little effort to combat this corruption. Lincoln Steffens, described the corruption as an attempt of large businessmen to corrupt their city for their own economic gains.
The Other America- Was an influential study of poverty in the United States in 1961. It argued that 25% of America was living in poverty. Many believed the novel was responsible for Lyndon B. Johnson's "War on Poverty".
The Atlanta Compromise- An agreement between African-American leaders and White Southern leaders in 1895. The agreement, headed by Booker T. Washington, was that Southern blacks would agree to work for whites, while White Southerners would provide Blacks with education and due process of law.
The Promises of American Life- Opposed strong unionization, and supported economic planning to raise the quality of life. As a result of reading this book, written by Herbert Croly, Theodore Roosevelt adopted New Nationalism.
