How does Josephy use language to make you, the reader, feel part of the debate?        (12 Marks)

Josephy makes the reader feel part of the debate by using many techniques. One of the many techniques used is emotive language. Saying the family “can’t survive” without the youngest stealing for them really pulls at the heart strings of the readers and makes them feel sympathy for the family, who can’t live without a child “pilfering” for them, and the child, who has the burden of taking care of ten people. It also makes the reader feel guilty and shameful for allowing something as “unchristian” as this to happen and not doing anything about this. The emotive language also makes the reader want to join the boy and help him, this making them a part of the story.

Another technique used by Josephy is juxtaposition using the words “opulence” and “destitution” brings two ideas together simultaneously. By doing this, the writer emphasises the difference between the two life styles and classes. He also mentions that this division is “unchristian”. It makes the reader think about the lack of equality between a group of people for something as materialistic as money. By doing this, the writer has succeeded in making the reader a part of the story. The vast difference think about the control the “opulence” has over their life and living conditions while the “destitution” is left to suffer for themselves.
