The Race and Gender Differences in
Country Music Videos to Rap Music Videos
Country Videos:
Tim McGraw вЂ" Live Like You Were Dying
Blake Shelton вЂ" Austin
Shaniah Twain вЂ" That Don’t Impress Me Much
Rap Videos:
50 Cent вЂ" I Get Money
Sir Mix-A-Lot вЂ" Baby Got Back
Snoop Dogg вЂ" Ain’t Nuthin’ but a G Thing
The differences in the portrayal of both artist and race in the rap videos vs. the country videos is quite astounding. Apart from the lyrics, the videos show amazing differences between the “whites” and “blacks”, as well as astonishing differences in their portrayals of women. Overall, the country videos portray women as objects of love and affection from the men singing about them. The rap videos on the other hand seem to objectify women and they are portrayed as merely objects of sexual desires.
Another big difference in the rap videos as to the country ones is how the artists themselves are portrayed. In the rap videos, the rappers are wearing lots of loose and baggy clothing, as well as a multitude of “bling”. However, the country artists wore jeans and button down shirts, with no noticeable “bling”. This difference shows that rappers are from a culture that believes looks and stature should be from the “hood”, and country artists seem to represent white America.
Another difference between the two types of videos is the violence content. Especially in the video by Snoop Dogg, the rappers are portrayed as living in a society filled with violence, whereas for the country singers (for the most part) violence is never even a thought.
The differences in the rap videos as opposed to the country videos are vast! From style of dress, to portrayal of women in the videos, rap and country videos project completely different views of our society today.
