Sexually Transmitted diseases are increasing at a rapid rate in America due to the reckless, careless and dangerous behavior people are taking part in. Sexually Transmitted diseases are caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites which can be given from one person to another. A common virus within the United Stated of America is HPV, it is said that more than 6 million people are in infected with the HPV infection every year. About half to three-fourths of the people who have ever had sex will have HPV at some time in their life. HPV is most common in women and men who are in their late teens or early 20s (Ho GYF, Bierman R, Beardsley L, Chang CJ, Burk RD.Natural history of cervicovaginal papilloma virus infection in young women. N Engl J Med 1998;338:423-8.U.S). Sexually Transmitted diseases are also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections or by the name they used be known by Venereal Diseases. There is about 25 different sexually transmitted disease. Which all can be spread by sexual contact, including vagina, anal and oral sex?
One of the biggest STD's that seems to be affecting men and woman in America is HPV which is also known as Human Papilloma Virus is it a virus that infects a persons skin. There is about 30 different know strains of HPV some of the strains can cause different symptoms such as genital warts in some men and woman and for woman they can cause cervical cancer(Newsweek, 4/24/2006).. Depending on the strain of HPV a person is infected with, he or she may or may not experience any of the HPV symptoms, which in some cases the one symptom that will be showing it warts, can appear on certain parts of the body such as the hands, feet or private parts of the body.
Research has also shown that HPV is one of the major cause of cervical cancer Cervical cancer occurs in woman when the cells on the cervix grow in an abnormal way. (2004, the American Cancer Society) Approximately 10,520 women will develop invasive cervical cancer and about 3,900 women will die from this disease. Most women who develop invasive cervical cancer have not had regular cervical cancer screening. Some types of HPV's are referred to as "low-risk" viruses because they rarely develop into cancer; these include HPV-6 and HPV-11, although the most common low-risk type cause neither warts nor cancer Nicole Gottlieb (April 24, 2002) Service of the National Cancer Institute. HPV's can lead to the development of cancer are referred to as "high-risk." Both high-risk and low-risk types of HPV's can cause the growth of abnormal cells, but usually only the high-risk types may lead to cancer. Sexually transmitted, high-risk HPV's have been linked with anogenital cancer in both men and women, which the American Cancer Society estimates will affect an estimated 10,370 women in 2005, killing about 3,710. (Nicole Gottelibi April 24, 2002, National Cancer Institute) These high-risk types of HPV's cause growths that are usually flat, as compared with the warts caused by HPV-6 and HPV-11. The majority of Americans are unaware of the link between certain types of HPV and cervical cancer: in one national survey, 70 percent of women were unable to name the cause of cervical cancer, and 76 percent had never heard of HPV (1999-2006 American Social Health Association).
A person who are infected with what is known to have a low risk form of HPV can causes one HPV symptom which is know as genital warts. These can develop anywhere on the body and in anytime it can be a matter of a few weeks to a few months after being exposed to someone with the infection or having sexual contact with someone who carries the HPV virus. The genital warts look like miniature cauliflower florets,
which are a flesh colored, soft and moist. Genital warts can develop on the vulva which is the external female genital, the cervix and in or around the vagina. HPV in men can cause genital warts to develop warts on the scrotum or the penis. Both male and females may develop genital warts in or around the anus and in some cases they can begin to appear on the thighs, buttocks and throat but it is also possible to have the HPV infection and have no any symptoms to indicate one is infected For the most part, genital warts are not painful but they are know to interfere with normal a person everyday functions, such as urinating and normal bowel movements, making it painful and uncomfortable for the person who has genital warts.
At times people who do not have symptoms have no idea they are infected with any type of virus or STD and do not get treated or tested and continue to give it to their sexual partners HPV.Health experts (July 2004 U.S Department of health) estimate there are more cases of genital HPV infection than any other STD in the United States.
