Introduction
DHL is a US company founded in San Francisco in 1969. The name of DHL is the first letters of the last names of the three company founders, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn. DHL Express was the first international air expresses company to operate in Hong Kong in 1972 providing air express service. In 2000, DHL began to operation in Hong Kong Airport as a Central Asia Hub, covering more than 6,000 square meters and handling over 100 flights per day. Now, DHL operates in 220 different countries, has around 285,000 employees, 6500 offices, more than 450 Hubs, warehouses & terminals, and also 420 aircraft & 76,200 around the world.
At the beginning of 2002, Deutsche Post World Net became the major shareholder in DHL. By the end of 2002, DHL was 100% owned by Deutsche Post World Net. At the same year, DHL entered into a franchise agreement for the development, construction and operation of a dedicated Express Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport. The agreement is for a term of 15 years, with a total investment of HK$780 million (US$100 million). DHL Hong Kong was awarded a Caring Company Logo for 2003/2004 by the Hong Kong Council for Social Service.
In Hong Kong, DHL has an extensive service network which includes Express Centers and Drop-off Boxes situating in major business districts. DHL Express has 2 service centers and the Central Asia Hub to channel all cross-border movements. These facilities are the most sophisticated amongst local industry players and have the capacity and the capability to move shipments quickly and efficiently.
