Although it seems that identity theft is very easily accomplished there are steps that can be taken to prevent one from becoming a victim. Fist off, shred credit card receipts, old bank statements, and bills using a 2-way or cross cut shredder before throwing them away and remove your name from mailing lists for pre-approved credit lines and telemarketers. Shredding in a cross cut shredder prevents people from being able to piece together the shredded documents and steal your information. By removing your name from mailing lists you can protect yourself from people stealing your information directly from your mailbox or from your trash. Second, close all unused credit card or bank accounts and contact your creditor or service provider if you notice odd charges or if expected bills don't arrive. This helps to prevent unused accounts from being used by outside sources for crime related activities. Third, keep your PIN number hidden when you use an ATM, do not carry information like your Social Security Number or any PIN numbers or passwords in your purse or wallet, and do not put your SSN on your checks. This helps to prevent thieves from not only obtaining your account information, but from stealing your identity. Fourth, order a copy of your credit report each year from one of the national credit bureaus and review it closely for any questionable entries. Not only does this allow you to see if your credit is being tampered with, but it allows you to keep track of any open accounts such as loans. Finally, update your computer virus software, use a secure browser, and install a firewall program and NEVER give out personal information via the phone, mail, or Internet unless YOU initiated contact.
If your identity HAS been stolen, you should take immediate action. This can be done by placing a fraud alert on your credit file and by notifying one of the national credit bureaus. It is also recommended that you contact all creditors and financial institutions that an identity thief may have used to conduct transactions in your name and close all tampered accounts. Also, contact your local police department, as well as your local FBI field office, and file a report.
