Impact of advancing technology on students’ life and social world
We’ve all seen young adult and students immersed in their smartphones, oblivious to the world around them. Technology is growing everyday, and this growth determines how the world operates. It is a general thought that these advancements in technology would be used to gain an understanding of other cultures, meet people all over the world, communicate easily with others, and help people to become more socially comfortable. However, some technological advances cause people to be distracted, and overly stressed. It is not wrong to say that social media connects us to more people virtually, but it’s also creating a social skills deficit in younger generations. In this world, simple communications are carried out through a keyboard or a smartphone. Today’s generation has forgotten the basics of a simple conversation.
One of the biggest technological impacts students are finding is the social media. The problem with social media is mainly associated with the excessive use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. Students are using such networking sites to try and get more people to come to events and interact with the organizations. They are also promoting events such as private or live parties. Technology may have been important in helping our world connect, but it is simultaneously responsible for the rapid loss of valuable relationships. Our priorities have been shifted, and our attention is now focused on acquiring the latest piece of technology rather than maintaining our relationships. Although we may pride ourselves on being technologically advanced, but this addiction towards technology is obsessive. Today’s generation seems to be unaware of the impact technology has had on our society. Simply sharing common interests with people through technology does not necessarily have a positive impact on social skills and social development. Tragically enough, this obsession with technology is now higher in importance, than paying attention in classes that could help us with our careers. Such networking sites could also have affects on our future, which includes jobs. There are certain companies that ask to see a person’s Facebook or Twitter page in order to decide if they are the right person for the job. Therefore it is evident that posts on such networking sites could have major impacts. A study of students and information technology found that over 85 percent of undergraduates used social networking sites on a daily basis. This study found indications that the usage of these sites is increasing yearly.
