Jamaica is a small Caribbean state renowned for its music and food. Despite its richness in culture, Jamaica has been struggling for the last two decade with intermittent recessions and heavy legacy of debt repayment. Agriculture remains an important part of Jamaican life and its economy. According to case study..... Over twenty percent of Jamaicans are employed in agriculture and over forty percent live in rural areas: agriculture supporting an estimate 150,000 rural families. For these poor people, farming remains the most important livelihood on which their fortunes and those of their children are based. Small farmers constitute the largest proportion of the rural poor and there is a crucial need for poverty reduction programs, therefore there should be a reduction in the high importation of agricultural produce that affects Jamaican farmers.
This study will prove to be beneficial to farmers living in rural parishes in Jamaica, epecially those farmers who wish to make their businesses a success. This can help them to identify their strength and weakness and to capitalize on their strength while they improve their weakness. This will also be beneficial to the Minister of Agriculture; this study can help them to make inform decisions about the country's current agricultural devastation. This study will also benefit other university students who wish to do further study on the impact of agricultural food imports on local farmers, they can use this information as a secondary data.
