Section 1

Stanton was well qualified to write In Harms Way. A very well

Educated man and graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and

Hampshire College in Massachusetts. Doug had many long interviews with the sailors.

He did incredible amounts of research and set up many interviews with the sailors

Families also. This book taught me a lot about how it really was to be on a Navy combat

Ship in the middle of WW II. The three main survivors talked about in the book were

Lewis Haynes-the doctor, Charles Butler-the captain, and Giles McCoy-a young marine.

When the ship was torpedoed the men were left in the ocean for about five days and

when finally rescued 321 men made it through the tragedy.

Section 2

Stanton's main thesis was really just to share this historic event of the sinking of

the USS Indianapolis and the story of its survivors. He also revealed how they

proved that Charles McVay's was innocent. After Doug saw the movie Jaws he decided

to write the book. When Doug tried finding research he couldn't find evidence so he took

it upon himself to find answers. Doug had interviews with survivors and all came

together for him at their reunion. Dou found that there wasn't sufficient evidence backing

the court martial of McVay. He had very good research when he was finally done writing

the book due to survivors and witnesses of the whole incident. Stanton did a fine job

proving McVay's court martial wrong, and piecing the whole series of events together.
