Course Description

This course describes Information Systems Engineering, their development methodologies, techniques and tools. A detailed course outline is provided below.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course  are to:

• Teach students about Information Systems; their context and development life cycle
• Teach students about  the themes in Information Systems development
• Teach students the techniques and Methodologies of Information Systems Engineering
• To show students the tools and tool sets of Information Systems Engineering

• Week 1:  Introduction to Information Systems: Context and Development methods

• Week 2: Information Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC)  (Avison, chap 3)

INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT THEMES CHAP 4-9, AVISON

• Week 3: Chap 4-5, Avison

• Organizational themes:  Information systems strategy, Business Process re-engineering, Information System Planning, Project Management

• Week4:  Chap  5, Avison

• People Themes: Participation, End User Computing, Expert systems, Knowledge Management, Drivers, Requirements Engineering

• Week 5: Chap 6, Avison 

• System Modelling? Process modelling; Data modelling; Object modelling

• Week 6:   Chap 7, Avison

• Rapid and Evolutionary Development

• Week7/8:  Chap 8, Avison

• Engineering themes: legacy systems, Software engineering, Automated tools, method Engineering, component development, Security issues, Database management, data ware housing , data mining
