Seeing how it takes spiders quite some time to catch a fly or two they can go for days without eating a single thing because spiders have slow metabolisms. When food is present though spiders can consume in large amounts. Many spiders can devour prey their own size or smaller. When the insect attaches itself to the sticky web the spider will sense its presence through the sensors on its feet. The spider will then wrap its prey in the silk substance so it won't be able to escape and then suck the insides of the victim. Then later the spider will digest its food and have enough energy for the next victim and not weigh down its web. "Spiders are the only animals to digest their food on the out side of their bodies. The gut of the spider is behind its stomach, and part of it goes into the front legs. This lets the spiders to live for days without eating".

Web spinning is a main part of a web-spinning spider. Some of the strands of the web are dry and some are sticky. The sticky strands are to catch insects and the dry ones are so the spider will travel the web faster and easier.

The spider usually waits in the center of the web, with one of her legs touching a strand. If she feels the strands jiggle, she goes to find the bug that is caught in the web. If it is just a leaf, or a really big bug that could tear up the web, the spider will cut the strands holding it, so it will fall out of the web. If she needs to rebuild a web, she will eat the broken strands and digest them. This helps her make more new silk.
