Dr. Gordon Allport was the first to give concept to personality. The nervous system is basically the control center for our bodies. There are two main divisions of the human nervous system: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) (King, 2010, p. 40). The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord, which makes up more than 99 percent of all the nerves in the body. The peripheral nervous system is defined as "the network of nerves that connects the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body." Its purpose is to transport information to and from the brain and spinal cord and carry out the commands of the CNS in order to perform muscular and glandular activities (King, 2010, p.40-41). The peripheral nervous system can be broken up into two major divisions: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system is made up of sensory nerves, whose purpose is to carry information from the skin and muscles to the CNS. It carries information regarding conditions such as pain, temperature, and the motor nerves (King, 2010, p. 41). The autonomic nervous system transports messages to and from the internal organs and monitors functions such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion (King, 2010, p. 41).
