For one to understand the Islamic world, one needs to interpret the way that society perceives women. The behavior in which Islamic culture convey to women reveals much about how the society is structured and how it relates to other issues such as basic human rights. Women are the beneficiary of family honor. The reasons for this are culture, authority, and fear.
Culture is a major issue that affects Muslim women today. Women are prohibited to do anything that may seem immodest. They are obligated to wear traditional clothing that covers them completely. In some cases, they are not well educated because of the fact that it makes them argumentative and they become unmarriageable. For instance, Maria's father took her out of school because "her father's friends had been advising him that education of girls was a bad thing." Muslim men show no consideration towards their women. For example, they believe women are brought into this world to give sons and obey their every request. Islamic culture has a major impact on how women are suppose to dress. In that Islamic world, women are required to veil after they reach puberty or get their menstrual. For instance, Maria and Jan dressed the shalwar kamez way each time they left their home.
Authority in which their husbands possess over them affects Muslim women within their society. They are sometimes violently mistreated for speaking back to them. Maria, for instance, started to get beating from her dad with an axe handle. The bruises were horrendous and made it difficult for her to do any activity that required movement. Men overdue their authority and go to the extremes with their women. They practically show no respect towards their women. "A man has the right to beat the women in his family." It is unbelievable that this sort of action is still aloud. There have been conferences held on child abuse and despite that; men have the right to discipline their family.
Imaging Muslim women having jobs or driving cars really brings fear to men in the Islamic world. They fear that women have the right to speak out their thoughts or are able to interfere in political affairs.
