This covers the movie called Jeremiah Johnson.
Jeremiah leaves to live in the Rocky Mountains, and to escape any more wars. Upon reaching the mountains he realizes it wasn’t as simple as he suspected. Luck shines on him when he stumbles on Hatchet Jack and takes the .50 rifle from his frozen corpse. Luck shines on him once more when Grizzly Adams finds him and takes him in to teach Jeremiah what he knows.
After he learns what he can from Grizzly he departs. After a several day journey he finds a gruesome scene of murder at a farm house, in which the only survivors are a woman driven mad, and her son. Jeremiah buries the bodies, fixes the house somewhat, and as he prepares to leave, offers the woman and her son a chance to come with him. The woman has Jeremiah take her son, and she returns to mourning the loss of her family. Jeremiah names the boy Caleb, although the boy never speaks, he accepts the name and goes with him.
Once more, Jeremiah comes upon another man, however, Del Geu is still alive but, buried in the ground. Jeremiah helps him out, and to find his stolen horses in the possession of an Indian raiding party. Jeremiah is reluctant and doesn’t wish to kill any of them, and Del rushes in guns blazing, forcing Jeremiah’s hand. Del also scalps the Indians and continues to travel with Jeremiah. The following day Jeremiah, Del, and Caleb are surrounded by a group of Flatheads, and while Jeremiah is distracted Del slips the scalps onto Jeremiahs’ horse.
When the Flatheads find the scalps, they take Jeremiah and the others to their chief, while the chief is examining the scalps and prepares to return them to Jeremiah; Jeremiah makes the mistake of offering them to him. In exchange, the chief offers Jeremiah his daughter for marriage, if he were to refuse the offer, he would be killed. Del also takes the time to leave with his horses.
Now married and still traveling with Caleb, he decides to settle, and builds a cabin in Crow territory. Several months later, a cavalry group requests his assistance in getting to their supplies so they can prevent multiple families from dying. Jeremiah reluctantly helps them and leads them through the Indian burial ground so they’ll make it in time. However, Jeremiah makes the mistake of traveling through the burial ground once more on his return trip.
