Joseph Pistone life as an undercover agent for the FBI and it is based on a true story. He went undercover for about six years in nineteen-seventy-six and was observing one of New York's to crime family called Bonnano's. Joseph Pistone posed as a street jeweler and went by the name Donnie Brasco, as a jewel thief Joseph Pistone had to know the street values of all precious gems and that was hard for him to do, but he was able to do it. He learned how to pick locks and dismantle alarms from real life jewelers. According to the FBI website, Joseph Pistone spent two full weeks studying how to be a criminal and he succeeded and he did say it was an incredibly dangerous job, but it had to be done." (Investigation, 2008) Donnie Brasco AKA Joseph Pistone finally caught the eye of Bonnano soldier Tony Mirra, who introduced him to his friend Lefty Ruggiero. Ruggiero has a reputation for being a stone cold killer by killing twenty or thirty people at a time. Mirra and Ruggiero found a lot of potential in Donnie Brasco AKA Joseph Pistone.

Meanwhile, Lefty Ruggiero and Donnie Brasco became really close and Lefty introduced him to the mafia ways and later on they became close friends and became business partners. Ruggiero took it upon himself to teach Brasco the ways of being a wise guy; he spent hours telling me the proper conduct of being a mob member and how to criticizing others for not complying with it. This all means he would be turning around and breaking all the rules when it served the purpose and he can make extra money doing it. The relationship between Ruggiero and Brasco bothered Tony Mirra because he was the one who discovered Brasco and introduced him to Lefty Ruggiero. Tony Mirra thought it would be a good idea to keep Donnie Brasco under him, but Lefty won that battle and his friendship, which is a good thing because Pistone was able to go back to the FBI with more information about the members and the operations of the mob.
