Johannes Brahms was born on May 7, 1833, in Hamburg, which is the second largest city in Germany. Brahms was known for being a composer of romantic music. He started playing piano at an early age, and he used his gift to "[help] to supplement the rather meager family income by playing the piano in restaurants and theaters, as well as by teaching" (Johannes Brahms). His piano teachers were Otto Cossel and Eduard Marxsen. At a young age he gave some public concerts in Hamburg. Though he was not a famous pianist, he did perform in some concert tours during his life. Johannes starting composing music as a young child, it is believed that he created his first piano sonata at the age of eleven. He really became known as a composer when he "went on a concert tour as accompanist to the Hungarian violinist Eduard Remenyi" (Johannes Brahms).

Johannes Brahms is known for composing numerous works for orchestra. Some of what he has written includes "four symphonies, two piano concertos, a violin concerto, a double concerto for violin and cello, and a large choral work" (Johannes Brahms). He is also known for being a great composer of song. Some of his popular works include his Hungarian Dance, The Waltzes op. 39, and the Liebeslieder Waltzes. Johannes was greatly influenced by Beethoven, so it is not uncommon to see his style is reflected in many of Johannes Brahms works. Johannes Brahms died on April 3, 1897 from cancer, and he is buried in Vienna.
