Joint Application Development (JAD) serves the purpose of gathering information through direct interaction with customers and development teams. This method has many benefits than more traditional techniques due to the nature of the process. Before JAD was commonplace the development team would be working from a range of requirements that when met would be presented and often need modification thus beginning much of the development phase over. Often times requirements change during the development process.

With the JAD model customers gain a deeper sense of emotional investment in projects due to hands on interaction and design input. The direct contact between development and end user also facilitates better understanding of functionality and usability concerns that may arise, fostering decreased design time and improved quality of products. When changes are necessary, the decision makes are typically present making it possible to continue without breaks in creative flow. JAD ultimately results in a better reflection of the customer's wants and needs.
