Julius Caesar Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 79-89
Quotation Analysis (3.2.79-89)
Antony was given permission to speak at Caesar's funeral despite Cassius's protests. Brutus states that Antony cannot blame them in any way or speak bad things about them. Antony Does not directly discourage Brutus's actions but he does create doubt by twisting words. Antony states that " The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious, and if it were so , it was a grievous fault and grievously hath Caesar answer'd for it"" Antony is telling the citizens of Rome that Brutus is a noble person, but there may be doubt in his actions. He is telling them that Brutus said that Caesar was ambitious, but Antony is also creating the doubt by using words like "if it were so". Antony also reminds the crowd of the severe punishment that Caesar received due to the doubtful ambitious fault. Later on Antony creates even more doubt by convincing the Roman crowd how much of a good person Caesar was. "He was my friend, faithful" , Antony tries to convince the citizens of Rome that Caesar was the exact opposite of what Brutus thinks of him. Antony enforces repetition on the idea that "Brutus says the he [Caesar] is ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man", the citizens were lead to believe that Brutus is honorable, but if there is doubt in his reasons, then there is room to doubt the killing of Caesar and any leadership Brutus tries to display.
