Kauai Vs Colonial Beach

Although Kauai and Colonial Beach are both beaches, I'd take the beaches of Kauai, Hawaii, over my home town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, any day. In the summer of 2003 I took a vacation to Kauai, and it was almost impossible to compare it to Colonial Beach. There are so many things that are different about the two: the people, the scenery, the climate, the activities, and just the way of life. About the only thing that is the same about the two is the fact that they are both beaches.
The first thing that I noticed was different about Kauai was when I stepped off of the airplane and all the people around me were smiling. In Colonial beach you're surrounded by crotchety old people and fat mothers yelling at their fat little kids. Everybody in Kauai was so care-free and had nothing but nice things to say to you. You're more likely to get the finger or cussed out by someone in Colonial Beach.
As soon as I got to the condo where I was staying and walked the few feet down to the ocean, I realized this was nothing like home. The beautiful mountains swept down to the white, sandy beaches. There was nothing but crystal clear water for miles, beautiful tropical flowers and fish, gorgeous Hawaiian guys surfing on the enormous waves, and the most breathtaking sunset I'd ever seen. I couldn't have even begun to imagine the way the air felt and smelled. It was literally paradise. Now a typical day on the shores of Colonial Beach would contain brown wave-less waters with a few dead fish floating along, a few fat people lounging about in their dollar store chairs, and an aroma that can almost be described as a mixture of piss, cigarette smoke, and stagnant water. There is also a lovely cloud of smog hovering overhead.
The activities in Kauai by far outnumber those of Colonial Beach. You'd be surprised to be able to find one nice outdoor activity to do in Colonial Beach. In Kauai the possibilities are endless. There's hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, surfing, sightseeing, helicopter rides, horseback riding, and you can even get a good suntan. In Colonial Beach the only color you can get is when you go swimming in the river and come out a brown-green color.
