Arthur was said to be the son of Uther Pendragon and Igraine. There have been debates over King Arthur's actual existence. Some historians insist that he indeed existed and others merely dismiss his existence as myth. Historians that support King Arthur's existence have finally found something to support their theory due to the fact that King Arthur's actual burial site was found but historians have yet to prove the actual existence of King Arthur's "Round Table". On the contrary historians that believe Arthur and the Round Table were merely myth support their hypothesis by providing factual evidence that the assumed "King Arthur" was never mentioned until 700 years after his death and was not king but a great warrior. Some historians continue to dismiss Arthur's existence because the only historical clue of importance is of no use since it provides factual evidence of the Battle of Llongborth but cannot lead to the actual site of the battle preventing historians from exploring the area.

Even though historians have endless disputes over his existence King Arthur has been a significant figure both in history and in literature. In "Historia Regum Britanniae" by Geoffrey of Monmouth he portrays a Britain that is doomed to poverty and misfortune after misfortune. However Uther Pendragon rises to kingship and marries Igraine, Duchess of Cornwall who later gives birth to Arthur. After Arthur becomes king and defeats the Saxons and establishes "The Round Table" Arthur leads England to a period of peace and prosperity.

Because of legends told in the past and in the present and due to King Arthur's importance in history he is indeed a significant figure in today's literature.
