This shows Grant has given up on interacting with his people and doesn't feel he can express himself properly to the people in this certain environment
2."They want me to make him a man before he dies" - Grant
Grant doesn't care about Jefferson or him having an understanding of what it is to be a man
3."And suppose he did: what then? What do I say to him? Do I know what a man is? Do I know how man is supposed to die? I'm still trying to find out how a man should live. - Grant
This is Grant admitting that he is lost in life and doesn't know who he is
4. "Suppose I was allowed to visit him, and supposed I reached him, and made him realize that he was as much a man as any other man; then what, he's still going to die." - Grant
Reinforces his apathy for his people, he doesn't realize that it is just as important to Jefferson as it is to his people for him to die like a man.

Shows that Grant considers Jefferson less of a person because he is uneducated

This is Grant dealing with his issues, like a coward, with alcohol, and not like a man.

This is Grant showing an obvious feeling of hopelessness for his people and that he has given up
8. "Every little thing was irritating me I caught of the students figuring out a simple multiplication problem on his fingers, and I slashed him hard across the butt with the Westcott ruler. - Grant
Grant displacing his emotions onto a child instead of the proper manner because he doesn't know how to, or what he's angry at.
