Occupation Description
General Job Description
Install, configure, and support an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet system or a segment of a network system. Maintain network hardware and software. Monitor network to ensure network availability to all system users and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability. May supervise other network support and client server specialists and plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures. Exclude "Computer Support Specialists" (15-1041).
Method of Entry
Occupations at this level generally require a bachelor's degree. Completion of the degree program generally requires at least 4 years but not more than 5 years of full-time equivalent academic work.
Use of Advanced Technology
Every occupation includes some relationship between job duties and the use of advanced technology -- defined as work activities and environments that incorporate complex electronics as found in computers, lasers, robotics, digital devices, satellites, etc. While basic computer skills such as "keyboarding" apply to an increasing number of occupations, each has different levels of technology interface.
