Schlieren Pinhole Diameter Calculation

Assumptions:

• 1 lux is required at the target to create a visible image. This is approximately the same amount of ambient light on a clear night under a full moon.

• Lenses and windows have 15% light rejection. For a setup with two lenses and two windows the light intensity is approximately halved.

• One quarter of the light from the source actually enters the optics.

• The knife edge halves the light after the focusing lens.

• Source intensity equals 600,000 lux

• Target diameter equals 0.0254m

With these assumptions combined, only one sixteenth of the light from the pinhole ultimately makes it to the target. An apparent minimum of 16 lux is required to be incident on the collimating lens.

To establish an appropriate safety factor a 200 micron pinhole was selected (Edmund Optics stock No. NT56-284).
