Love, Sex & Eating the Bones

I sat down to watch a film and to analyze it. My choice was, "Love, Sex & Eating the Bones". I know, the name is somewhat of an attention getter and that's ultimately why I chose to watch it. After watching the film, several questions needed to be answered in order for me to give an effective analysis of the movie. I will cover the story, theatrical elements, cinematography, editing techniques as well as give my overall impression of the film. By the end of this essay, it is my goal that you the reader, can make an educated decision on whether or not to see this film.

You have to suck the marrow for life. For it is said that marrow is the sweetest.

In order for a person to truly get the most out of this experience that's known as lifeÐ'...you've got to be willing to get to the core of itÐ'....live it fullyÐ'....don't detach yourself by means of porn, drugs or whatever things prevent you from truly being in each and every moment that you exist. That is the meaning of this film. We're introduced to a young man by the name of Michael at the start of the film. Michael is a photographer who is struggling to gain confidence in his work. It is for this reason that Michael has the practical job of working as a security officer.

One night while doing laundry at the Laundromat, Michael meets a beautiful Marketing Manager by the name of Jasmine. Jasmine sees some of the work that

Michael's brought with him and is impressed. Michael asks Jasmine on a date and she agrees to go. That's where the story gets a little complicatedÐ'...

Michael's got an addiction to pornography and doesn't want Jasmine to know about it. What Michael doesn't know is that he's met Jasmine's cousin who happens to live with her while visiting the porn shop, Pornucopia. The cousin, "Peaches", as she's called, doesn't like him from the start. When Peaches finds that her cousin is seeing Michael, she tries to discourage her from seeing him anymore.

They say that you can't stand in the way of true love and that seemed to be the case with Michael and Jasmine. In spite of Peaches blatant disapproval, her cousin continued to see Michael and eventually they became sexually intimateÐ'...or at least tried to! Here the plot thickens. We find that Michael cannot perform when he's with Jasmine, only when he's alone with his pornography. This fact eventually becomes clear to Jasmine and she decides to dump him.

Michael wants to get help and eventually seeks it out. He finds that by addressing his addiction to pornography, he is able to find his vision again. He's able to truly critique his work and is able to produce great pieces again. He also finds that he loves Jasmine and wants to try and win her back.

While it all might sound a bit bizarre, the story rang true. Many people today have ongoing issues with intimacy and they are oftentimes attributed to some form of addiction, especially pornography. I found that the subject matter was different and refreshing.

From a cinematic and editing standpoint, the film wasn't all that complex. There were a lot of medium angle and close up shots used. Some of the camera techniques that were used often were panning, tilting and eye level angles. The director used cross cutting in order to create transitions between scenes. There were a lot of movement shots and several zooms to create photographs in the film.

This movie wasn't remarkable when it came to the visual elements. For the most part the settings were Michael and Jasmine's apartments. They were, however, set up so that they gave a visual reflection of each character's personality. Jasmine's apartment was decorated and warm. Michael's was stark and a bit disorganized, just as his character was.

The costumes consisted primarily of shirts, slacks, and sweaters. The security guards, including
